Beers & Ideas

We've been busy so far this year at Weather! So we let off a bit of steam at BottleCraft yesterday – and hosted our first Beers & Ideas event of 2017.

There has been a switch up in format of Beers & Ideas — rather than an all-out open mic night where anyone can get up and speak at any point – we added some structure in the form of 3 scheduled speakers followed by an open mic session, along with some key questions relating to the event's theme, Stoke-on-Trent's City of Culture bid.

Chrish updated everyone who attended about our Well Now You Know project, which is advancing every week internally and should be ready for public beta soon. Local polymath Sean Dissington then took the mic, and spoke about his Blacklight project – a film-only photography setup that includes processing, workshops and a lot of potential. Matt and Dan from Keele University then spoke through their vision for Open Badges, a CV-boosting scheme of digital badges that are awarded when individuals show true excellence in their fields.

This was followed by Jack talking about Bottling Culture in the open session — literally bottling local culture in the form of a beer and selling it. Mixed with a lot of lively discussion, open feedback and some great in-depth answers to the key bid-related questions up on the wall, a good night was had and we look forward to the next one.

Thanks to everybody who came down, John from The Guardian for filming on the night, BottleCraft for their hospitality and all the kind donations we received, too. Talks are already in place to make that next event bigger and better... so watch this space.
