A five-year arts programme in Stoke-on-Trent that aims to make the city a more interesting place to live and work. The programme is achieved by a consortium of local arts organisations banding together to hold events in spaces that are otherwise left un-occupied and unloved.

Brief

A year on from the initial Art City launch, we were commissioned by the consortium of 6 organisations to create a visual identity and supporting publication and infographics. Capturing the essence of the initiative’s aims was imperative, whilst not linking to any of the consortium directly.

Approach

Taking inspiration directly from floor plans and cityscapes, an abstract art direction was formed from display lettering that when placed together in clusters were reminiscent of floor plans, and when stacked appeared as high rise buildings. A custom typeface was created for the project.

Outcome

Purposefully monochrome to act as a blank canvas for the consortium related and the events the project will support, the Art City project was transformed through it’s updated visual language and unanimously embraced by all members of the six creative organisations.
